I have a fantail that a few months ago, started floating belly up. I read on the net to try feeding it mashed up peas to clear its bladder. I tried that but it doesn't seem to work. Does anyone have any other ideas or a diagnosis?

Epsom Salt. About a table spoon per 5 gallons. Most likely the goldfish has trapped air in it's stomach making it float belly up. The salt will help open up the pores on the fish and make passing the air easier.

To prevent this in the future be sure to feed the goldfish only sinking foods. NOTHING that will stay on the surface. Otherwise it will gulp in more air at feeding time and have trouble passing it. This is a pretty common problem with fancy goldfish as their internal organs have been smushed and rearranged to fit into their selctively bred body shapes. The weirder the goldfish body build the more likely they are to have this problem.
